Hi everyone! I hope it's okay for an outsider to post some questions.
My husband and I are visiting San Francisco later this week and I was hoping to get some ideas for dining out. Our two favorite cuisines are Indian and Mexican. I prefer "authentic" restaurants--that is, not franchised. We'll be walking or BARTing San Fran, so any places within the city would be great.
Thanks!
(edited to fix the bad abbreviation!!! Sorry guys!)

Likewise, I get myself all lathered up when people refer to Philadelphia (my hometown) as Philly, or worse, Philthy.
Thanks for the recommendation second, too!

16th and Mission
There are WONDERFUL taquerias in the area. I am not sure what you consider authentic, but taquerias are the best for awesome tacos, burritos, and tortas. Not to mention the drink horchata.I love California Mexican food and I am not as much of a fan of "Tex Mex", slightly different concepts in Mexican cuisine.

Re: 16th and Mission
awesome. i've been looking online, but the sort of Mexican place i'm looking for doesn't tend to have a website. i got the impression, though, that Valencia and Mission (separately) are good places to go.as for "authentic", i mean a place where Mexicans/Hispanics would go. there's a restaurant just outside of our city here and it's owned by Mexicans and the food is fantastic. plus, it's pretty cool atmosphere.

Re: 16th and Mission
Valencia is one Block up from Mission. It is definitely a good area for Mexican restaurants.July 18 2005, 17:36:36 UTC 6 years ago

Re: 16th and Mission
Picaro is a wonderful tapas place located at 16th and Mission directly across from the Roxy Theatre. They are reasonable priced, serve large portions, make good sangria and flan, and are easy to BART to. Plus, the neighborhood is fun to walk around-bookshops, hat shops, sex shops, and local venues to be entertained at; it is awesome!

very cool! thanks so much!July 18 2005, 20:04:52 UTC 6 years ago
Re: 16th and Mission
And there's more!!!Yes, the best Mexican is right there - my fave is Pancho Villa on 16th between Mission and Valencia (1/2 block from 16th Street BART)...
And Good Vibes rocks (but is overpriced)
AND... if you head up another black, to 16th and Guerrero, MY favorite Indian / Pakistani dive restaurant - Pakwan. SOOOOO good, sooooo cheap. YUM.
(PS.... try not to call it San Fran... it's San Francisco, The City, or SF.... calling it San Fran is the verbal equivalent of bermuda shorts and short-sleeve Hawaiian shirts... oh, and it gets cold and foggy at night, be prepared!)

Re: 16th and Mission
Lol... not to worry. But the natives are restless and eager to pounce on the "San Fran"-ers.July 18 2005, 20:28:50 UTC 6 years ago
Re: 16th and Mission
Don't be fooled into going to the Pakwan in the Financial District. It sucks.July 18 2005, 20:29:50 UTC 6 years ago

Re: 16th and Mission
Just to be clear, I definitely suggest the Pakwan on 16th. It's the particular one in the Financial District I do not like.July 18 2005, 20:32:48 UTC 6 years ago
Re: 16th and Mission
ah, that's better.i know some of the restaurants in my city's Financial Area have limited hours/cater to the business schedule, so i'd be hard-pressed to heartily recommend them to visitors. thanks!!!
